Awamaki Company Profile

Awamaki is a dedicated social enterprise consisting of a Peruvian Asociación Civil and a U.S. 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, working in tandem to uplift women’s associations in rural Peru. Founded in 2009 by Kennedy Leavens and Miguel Galdo, Awamaki emerged from the desire to support a cooperative of women weavers from Patacancha, a Quechua community in the Andes. With a commitment to using market strategies for social change, Awamaki has expanded its focus beyond weaving to include health, education, and sustainable tourism programs, all aimed at empowering women and fostering economic independence.

At the heart of Awamaki’s mission is the belief in cultural sustainability, driven by community engagement. Through fair trade principles, each handcrafted product is created in collaboration with Andean artisans, ensuring that the traditional craft of Quechua textiles is preserved and celebrated. The organization emphasizes the importance of cultivating respectful relationships and equitable opportunities for women artisans, supporting them in launching their own businesses. Awamaki’s vision is to co-create sustainable programs that enhance the economic opportunities of Indigenous women, enabling their communities to thrive.
